New Meters To Help HEMC Better Serve Members

Habersham EMC (HEMC) will be installing new meters over the next 18 months to increase the efficiency and reliability of our electric system. Meters, like all machines, must be replaced periodically as new technology improves efficiency.


HEMC has hired a contractor, SGS, to conduct the installations. SGS employees will be clearly identified as HEMC contractors and will be driving vehicles marked as such. In addition to a uniform, each SGS employee will have identification, as well as can provide a name and telephone number of HEMC personnel if you have questions.


While at each location, SGS employees will:


  • take pictures of the old and new meters
  • test the meter base
  • record the GPS coordinates


This information will assist HEMC with billing, ensuring safety and correctly mapping our service area. All this should take approximately five minutes or less.


Once the project is complete, all HEMC members will benefit from the digital upgrade. These new meters will allow HEMC personnel to:


  • verify power has been restored before leaving an area following an outage
  • improve system reliability
  • reduce expenses associated with manually connecting and disconnecting meters
